Writing a professional cover letter requires you to carefully read the job listing and highlight key language, skills and requirements mentioned in the listing to incorporate into your cover letter.
- Your Details/Date/Company
Include your contact details at the very top, followed by the date, then the Hiring Manager’s contact details.
- Highlight the name of the role you are applying for at the beginning of your cover letter.
- If you know the last name of the Hiring Manager, address them as Mr/Mrs/Ms surname. Alternatively, use Dear Sir/Madam.
- Opening Paragraph
Express your enthusiasm for the role. Very briefly state what you can bring to the company, and mention that more details are included in the rest of the letter.
- Middle Paragraph - The Sales Pitch
Use this section to refer back to the information in the job listing. State your strengths, relevant skills and traits that make you stand-out as an applicant.
- After the Sales Pitch - The Commendation
To demonstrate your interest in working for the business, show the employer that you know a bit about them. Accordingly, do some research about the business if they have not talked about themselves in the job listing. You want to mention something the company has achieved, been recognised for, or some unique aspects about their company culture which make them a desired place to work.
- Final Closing Paragraph
This brief section is where you encourage the employer to take the next step and invite you for an interview.
- Ending/Salutation
If you’ve used Dear Sir/Madam in your opening, close with “Yours faithfully”; if you’ve used the Hiring Manager’s last name, close with “Yours sincerely”, followed by your full name.

Dear Mr Monks,
Junior Floor Sales Manager – MegaJobs Ref: 00234
I have long admired your store’s leading position in the supply of men’s clothing and accessories. As someone who has extensive retail sales experience and a passion for men’s fashion, I would relish the opportunity to be part of your team. Let me introduce myself further to you.
I was brought up in retail. My mother has run Lulu’s Cake Emporium for many years. As a child, she brought me into the shop to help run it. Through the years, I have built up my store management skills such that, at the age of 23, I was able to acquire a job as store manager for Tumbell’s Bakery. This position I have now held for 5 years. In that time, I was able to increase sales by 60% by implementing better merchandising processes and staff sales training.
You’ll find I have very sound office management skills around budgeting, stock management, recruitment, training and buying. These skills back-up my qualifications in Sales Management (attained from Local Town Poly Tech) and Management (attained from university of Local Town).
Because I have followed your store's impressive involvement in the fashion industry, I know that you now run stores here in this country and in five other countries. This is truly inspirational growth. I am also aware that you recently acquired the management skills of Rhys Harkman who is internationally known as a skilled business leader. To be able to come under the tutelage of Rhys would be amazing. My hopes are that I could develop my skills in your company and become a highly valued member of your driven team of professional retailers.
My C.V. is attached for your reference. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to tell you in more detail how I believe I can add value to your company’s growth in sales and share with you some ideas I have on customer care.
Yours sincerely,
Brendan Block
